Occasionally, we speak to a member of the Orientation Marketing team to learn more about their roles at Orientation Marketing, as well as what makes them tick.
Today we speak to Lily Platt.
Tell Us a Little Bit About Your Role At Orientation Marketing.
I am an Account Executive and my role at the agency is based within the Account Management team. My position focuses on assisting the Account Management department, which includes attending meetings, gathering stats, writing and sending upcoming agendas to clients to ensure everything is in order, and taking notes in meetings so nothing is missed. I currently work with lots of clients, and as my job role progresses, I am taking on more tasks and expanding my knowledge. I'm also completing a Level 4 Marketing Executive Apprenticeship with Apprentify, where I am learning about a variety of marketing topics which I can implement into my job role.
What is your favourite part of the working day?
I enjoy interacting and attending meetings with clients, finding out what they need and how we can best assist them. Being in these meetings also allows me to see what my colleagues do and how they help clients, so I can gain a broader knowledge of how we assist the client. For example, the creative department will run through all the designs and imagery they’ve made, then the digital team will show what they’ve done with those assets and how the campaign has been created. As the teams go through each section, I can see campaigns and projects really come together and see how it benefits the client best.
How did you come about working in marketing?
I was made redundant in Summer 2024, so I reflected on what I wanted to do and whether a different career path was better suited. At my previous job I was a Junior Account Manager, so when I saw Orientation Marketing were hiring for an Account Executive, I wanted to go for it as it was similar to what I’d done before. I have also previously done an administration role which I found was quite mundane, as it was the same exact thing every day. Whereas with account management, there are lots of different elements, making my day to day much more interesting.
Tell us about your best day at the agency so far...
Moving into the new office in The Steam Mill, when we had everything set up and we felt settled. It’s a nicer place to work in than the old office, so it’s more exciting coming in, being greeted by the reception staff, having more space and being in a more friendly environment. (Being able to use the free coffee machine is a bonus too!!)
What inspires you?
My family really inspires me to work hard, they are all very hardworking, which is something I’ve adopted. They’ve installed in me that to get where you want and to do well in life, you need to work as hard as you can as it can pay off and be very rewarding.
I’m also just inspired to prove to myself that I can do certain things. Being able to live a good, exciting and healthy life inspires me each day, so I want to prove to myself that I can achieve that.
Recommend a TV series/film you recently watched.
I would highly recommend one that I have watched recently, Mad Men, which is about a marketing agency. The show is based in the 1960s/70s, I love the clothing, the way the show was made and the story line too. I have also recently re-watched my ultimate favourite film, Shrek 2. It’s a funny, light-hearted, comfort film which everyone can enjoy, young or old.
What’s your favourite music genre?
I don’t have a particular genre of music I stick to, I enjoy listening to all different types of music. Currently, my top song is Jefferson Airplane’s song ‘Somebody to Love’. If I had to recommend a few artists, it would be Lana Del Rey, She Wants Revenge and The Beatles. Quite a variety, but I love listening to them all.
If you had a yacht, what would you name it?
I'd name my yacht ‘Sailebrate Good Times’, it’s a fun name that would cheer anyone up. But, if I had a plethora of yachts, here are some more fun names I’d use: Knot Sure Knot Sorry, Peer-Pressure, Yacht to be Kidding Me, Knot My Problem, Shipaholic and Yacht Ya Looking At?
What is the strangest meal you’ve ever eaten?
I think it would be the time I ate raw sea urchin while visiting Borough Market in London. It’s cool to say that I’ve tried it, but I don’t think I’ll be having it again.
What is the Best Marketing Tip You Can Give?
It would say put yourself in the clients ‘shoes’ and try seeing things from their perspective. This can be beneficial as it can help remind you of their expectations, which you can then evaluate to ensure you’re meeting them and that you understand your client and their needs to the best of your ability.
If I was going through the process as a customer/client, what would I want included, what would I expect included, what are the most important elements, what makes it most enjoyable?
It’s important to ask yourself these questions and assist the client or customer to provide the best service possible.
What Skill Do You Think Everyone Should Learn?
Something I think people should learn is to be more care-free. Being able to take a step back and see what life is really about, and that building your self-confidence makes you a stronger person. It benefits you inside and outside of work, and makes you a more positive person, which reflects on yourself and others too.
It may not sound like much of a skill, but it definitely is, as it's something that lots of people (including myself sometimes) forget to implement into each day.
How are you finding your apprenticeship?
I am really enjoying my apprenticeship, and I don’t think I would be in this job role without it. Since I previously decided university wasn’t for me, I thought an apprenticeship would be the best way to get into marketing. It has allowed me to gain a Level 4 qualification while learning on the job what it's like. I'm able to apply the things I'm learning to real life, straight away. I would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone looking at getting into marketing, it provides real world experience and gives you a qualification.
